Wisconsin GOP Senate nominee Ron Johnson Fights Child Abuse Victims Rights
Wisconsin Republican Senate nominee Ron Johnson has long voiced his objections to the Wisconsin state legislation allowing victims of child abuse to sue their abusers. Yesterday, a video showing Ron Johnson testifying against the bill in the state legislature leaked to the web. In his testimony, Ron Johnson makes a shocking statement:
I think it is extremely important to consider the economic havoc and the other victims [the Wisconsin Child Victims Act] would likely create.
In effect, Ron Johnson’s comments on the Wisconsin Child Victims Act, a bill that would extend the statute of limitations on civil suits for victims of child abuse, indicates his believe that we should put economic factors ahead of the interests of child abuse victims by claiming that the economic impact of a lawsuit against a child abuser could make them a victim too.
Supporters of Ron Johnson say his comments may have been mis-characterized. They say that what he really meant was that the bill doesn’t put enough protections in place for businesses, non-profits, and attorneys.
